Dr. Triveni Krishnan

Dr Triveni Krishnan is presently a Scientist F and serving in the Division of Virology at National Institute of Cholera and Enteric Diseases, Kolkata. She graduated from University of Calcutta and joined the Division of Virology as a Research Associate in 1987 to pursue research in the field of molecular biology of enteric viruses. Since then Dr Krishnan has contributed in the area of molecular virology including electron microscopy and ultrastructural studies of rotaviruses. She is currently involved in studies to understand the phylogenetic aspects of important diarrhoeagenic viruses viz. rotaviruses, astroviruses, human caliciviruses [Norovirus and Sapovirus], picobirnaviruses and enteric adenoviruses to compare the genetic diversity of the strains in our country with those reported from other parts of the world. She visited the laboratory of Dr Ulrich Desselberger in the Department of Pathology, University of Cambridge & Public Health Laboratory Services from 1992 to 1993 in course of an Indo UK collaborative research project to study zoonotic transmission in rotavirus infection. She visited Department of Pediatrics and Department of Hygiene at Sapporo Medical University, Japan from August 2000 - 2001 as a JICA counterpart to study molecular biology of astroviruses and human Caliciviruses. She and her colleagues reported the Adult Group B rotavirus infections in Kolkata in 1999 for the first time outside China and have recently again reported an intergenogroup recombinant Norovirus from Kolkata to the scientific community in 2008. They have also shown that human picobirnaviruses and astroviruses are associated with acute watery diarrhoea in Kolkata. Dr Krishnan has published several papers in peer reviewed journals and has been invited by several journals to act as a reviewer to share her area of expertise. She is also on the editorial board of BMC Infectious Diseases, ISRN Microbiology and World Journal of Clinical Infectious Diseases. She is a life member of Society of Biological Chemists [India], National Environmental Science Academy, Electron Microscope Society of India and Indian Science Congress Association.
